A powerful earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale struck near the Kamchatka region of Russia early this morning. Following the quake, tsunami warnings have been issued for Japan, Russia, Alaska, Hawaii, and various other parts of the Pacific region.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at 8:25 AM local time. Initially reported as a magnitude 8.0, the intensity was later upgraded to 8.7.

The quake struck about 250 kilometers off the northern coast of Hokkaido, Japan, at a depth of 19.3 kilometers beneath the sea.

Japanese authorities initially predicted tsunami waves up to 1 meter high, but later updated the warning, stating that waves as high as 3 meters (10 feet) could potentially strike.
